John Williams, in his foreword to this book, points to the unique position of the guitar in the development of Western music. Its strength has always been as a popular instrument, yet it can also form a bridge between the popular and the classical tradition. In this valuable guide for players and teachers, Stimpson, himself an accomplished performer, has assembled an impressive list of experts. Their contributions bring together the various aspects of teaching, repertoire, and technique, embracing not only the classical tradition, but also the essentials of lead, bass, folk, flamenco, and jass guitar in a handbook of unparalleled scope and authority.
