This book grew out of a conference on "The Culture of the Stalin Period" which was held at the Zentrum fur interdisziplinare Forschung of the University of Bielefeld, West Germany, 20-23 October 1986. According to the guiding principles of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research the participants were chosen from different disciplines to unite in the effort to throw light on the phenomenon of Stalinist culture. Up until now the culture of the Stalin period has been studied mainly from a political or ideological point of view. In this book specialists from many countries approach the problem from inside. The authors deal with numerous aspects of Stalinist culture such as art, literature, architecture, film and popular culture.
