Industry Reviews
This is a book of hidden and very useful depths, despite its somewhat flippant title and magazine-style approach to layout. Nick Page starts off with the assumption that many people are put off reading the Bible because of its length, dullness, archaic language and so on (an assumption most clergy would agree with), and so he sets out to demystify it. If that means cutting it down to bite-size chunks, picking out the essential bits and using everyday language with a touch of humour, then that's fine as long as the system works. And it does work surprisingly well. By way of timelines, diagrams, explanatory boxes and even a 'street map' showing routes through the Bible's 750,000 words, Page makes the process an adventure trip that has the knack of appealing to all ages. But this is no alternative Bible, to be read instead of the real thing. Rather, it's an introduction to help readers get more out of the Bible and understand it better when they finally realize it isn't so intimidating after all. 'There are bits of the Bible that no one understands, where even the experts are baffled,' Page admits. 'But there are far more numerous bits where the meaning is plain and clear and where you can put it into action.' Some scholars have ducked the more puzzling sections to which he refers, but Page tackles them head-on in boxes labelled 'Tricky Bits'. These boil the conundrums down to their essentials and explain what is really going on behind the muddled translations. Nick Page has an upbeat, friendly style without being frivolous. His book serves as a perfect introduction to both the Old and New Testaments. (Kirkus UK)
