About the Author

Emma Middleton is a writer, illustrator and dance teacher. After a fifteen-year career as a professional dancer, during which time she performed for the Vienna Ballet, Emma became a dance teacher at her own ballet school. Emma's passion is to create stories that will enhance a child's sense of wonder, delight and unlimited possibility. She lives near Noosa, in Queensland.

Briony Stewart is an award-winning writer and illustrator from Western Australia. She has a double degree in Fine Art and Creative Writing and is passionate about all forms of art for kids and the young at heart. When she's not writing or drawing, Briony can be found programming events, projects and art activities for festivals or doing something weird like building dragons and organising her local egg-rolling championships.

A Delight to Read Out Loud

Surprising as it may be, my grandson, Euwing, is asking me to read, The Bear in our Backyard, more often, and slightly pipping out, The Lion in our Living Room, by a nose. I am not surprised he is choosing either of these current favourites, but I thought Lion was going to be the ultimate winner. But, Emma Middleton and Briony Stewart have done it again! The Bear in our Backyard is a companion book for, The Lion in our Living Room, and both celebrate family, especially honouring the importance of fathers and mothers and the things they do to make us all feel loved and special. I highly recommend this picture book. It's suitable for children aged 2-6 years. Euwing is 2 years old and loves both these books, especially the shadowy illustrations. He combs the pages searching for the subtle breadcrumbs of clues and is delighted when he makes the connections. Emma's rhythmical sentences sound delightful when read out loud, the best way to share a picture book with children. I know many adults who enjoy joining in too. I will be sharing a video on my blog, over at Shadytree Books, showing Euwing and his daddy enjoying another adventure with Tom, Tilly and Bessie from The Bear in our Backyard. So, gather around the fireplace, or snuggle up in bed, this is another book I know that simply MUST be read!

Why I love The Bear in our Backyard

I love 'The Bear in our Backyard,' for so many reasons. It is a fun, engaging and beautiful rhyming book for young children, that highlights the special qualities of mums, family, fun and games. My kids loved the suspense around the bear waking up and I particularly love the images of love and warmth that Mummy Bear provides. We already have 'The Lion in our Living Room,' and this book is the perfect partner. I know we will be reading it again and again.
