Teaching Reading Comprehension Strategies is a step-by-step guide based on the latest reading comprehension research and is the result of Sheena’s learning journey into research-based practice and her experiences teaching in a real classroom.

This book includes information on how to introduce and teach strategies and how they fit into your literacy programme. Each strategy has its own chapter, with:

  • an explanation of the strategy and how it supports comprehension
  • the language we use when using a strategy
  • guided and independent student activities that support teaching the strategy.
There is also an extensive range of teacher- and student-friendly support material, including strategy starter posters, photocopiable masters, bookmarks and certificates.

Teaching Reading Comprehension Strategies comes with a CD that provides all photocopy masters and support material in digital format.

Guided Reading Strategies Year 1 - Year 6

This book is an absolute gem! For classrooms that use Guided Reading Strategies, this book has a wealth of information and easy to use strategies that make complete sense. It works in well with the CAFE strategy and covers many of the strategies supported under that banner. I'm going to use it when school goes back and simply can't wait to use it as part of my language programme.

Fantastic teaching resource

5

This book is full of practical ideas for teaching reading comprehension. It is easy to follow and is well organised under the various comprehension strategies. There are plenty of activities to match the theory, including (but not limited to) photocopiable work-sheets. It also explains how to model the strategies simply but comprehensively. I am a Year 5 teacher and would recommend this book for any Primary teacher from Year 2 upwards.

Useful resources to support teachers in improving student reading comprehension. Fantastic that it comes with a CD that provides all photocopy masters and support material in a digital format. Collated in a ring binder format, which makes photocopying easier, but looks messy on my shelf.
