Substance Use Disorders and Addictions covers a range of substance and behavioral addictions.

Written by a former president of the addictions division of ACA, this text has cutting edge content around ethical practice and addictions including the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, the 2014 ACA code of ethics, and 2016 CACREP standards. Rather than containing the ethical content to one chapter as other texts have done, there is a section discussing ethical considerations within each chapter in addition to case scenarios and ethical dilemmas for the student to consider. The key distinction of this book is its integration of content as it might appear in an individual (often with co-occurring issues) rather than presenting information in a compartmentalized manner.

The author's goal is to educate students how to work with people holistically rather than focusing on specific substances. In order to achieve this goal, the book contains a single case example that helps compare and contrast different treatment approaches, but also several standalone cases within each chapter that will help highlight issues of diversity and social justice.

Freeman "Current, comprehensive and counseling-based, the author provides important information necessary for training professional counselors, both generalists and those who specialize in addictions counseling." -- Nancy Sherman "An updated text that focuses not only on the theory, but also the practical applications of the theory." -- Richard S. Takacs
