In this book, Richard Chasdi brings an impressive degree of scientific rigor and statistical analysis to bear on the topic of terrorist violence in the contemporary Middle East. He has constructed an original and highly useful typology of terrorist groups which takes into consideration three main factors: ideology, goals, and recruitment patterns. With the assistance of this functional typology, Chasdi argues that future acts of terrorism -- including likely targets -- can be predicted, thereby allowing for preventive measures to be taken on both the local and international levels. Yet Serenade of Suffering is more than just a tool for anti-terrorist professionals. It is also an insightful and complex portrait of modern terrorism in general: its root causes, the key differences between state-sponsored and non-state terrorist organizations, and the questionable wisdom of trying to distinguish between "good" and "bad" types of terrorism. A "must-read" for area specialists, students of conflict studies, and international development professionals.

[Chasdi] has provided a persuasive framework for understanding terrorist behavior...I was struck by the policy relevance of some of his observations and conclusions...His study deserves a wider audience. -- Robert S. Wood, Dean, Center for Naval Warfare Studies, Department of the Navy [Chasdi's] use of empirical and quantitative analysis renders this a singularly unique study of terrorism... The rich variety of data yields a plethora of findings about the cyclical nature of Middle East terrorism, the high frequency of violence committed by anonymous groups, and the role of major political events as triggers of terrorist actions. CHOICE Richard Chasdi has written an original and significant text with the publication of Serenade of Suffering: A Portrait of Middle East Terrorism 1968-1993... Mr. Chasdi's text is a welcome addition and well worth reading and considering. More importantly, it is incumbent upon policy makers to ponder his evaluation and conclusions based upon his research. Without serious review of American failures and greater cultural understanding and respect for the Islamic world, the United States will continue to lose valuable opportunities to repair the breach between the United States and the Islamic world.
