The first complete field guide to the fishes of Australia’a southern half – now in a revised edition.

The species entries are grouped in families in the internationally accepted scientific order. Families are arranged so that those with closely related features follow on from one another, making comparison easy. Length measurements for adults are given along with general text highlighting, diagnostic features, interesting aspects of the species and habitat. Every species account is accompanied by one or more colour photographs, nearly all of which show the fishes in their natural habitat, and a distribution map. All these features enable positive identification of over 700 species. This marvellous volume will also appeal to fish biologists, divers, naturalists, commercial and recreational fishermen, and anyone with an appreciation for these ancient evolutionary survivors.

About the Authors

Dr Barry Hutchins is a marine biologist at the Western Australian Museum, specialising in the classification, distribution and evolution of the fishes inhabiting Australia's southern seas. He has published over 90 scientific and popular articles on the Australian fish fauna, including four field guides. Since 1981 he has served on the Records Authority of the Australian Anglers Association as chief scientific advisor.

Roger Anthony Swainston is an Australian painter. Naturalist and zoologist, he is one of the most recognized artists of the underwater world. He was raised in the Western Australian outback surrounded by wildlife. In the late 70's he travelled and worked around the north coast of Australia on fishing trawlers.
