An award-winning tale of friendship from a master picture book creator.

All the children are afraid of mean Mr Wintergarten. His garden is grey and sunless and it is guarded, they say, by a dog like a wolf and a saltwater crocodile. By contrast, the garden of his sunny new neighbours, the Summers, is a playground of happiness and flowers. One day Rose's ball goes over the fence into Mr Wintergarten's garden and, prompted by her mother, Rose visits her frosty next-door neighbour, bearing hot fairy cakes and flowers. What will Mr Wintergarten say?

A must for every picture book collection

5

I use Rose and Mr Wintergarten regular in classrooms, not only for children to use their imagination (eg While I read the first four pages close your eyes, imagine, then draw what you think each person's house looks like), but to help them develop their emotional intelligence. Mr Wintergarten (a student) can sit in the interview chair while the other students ask him questions, such as those about his childhood, to try to get clues about to his behaviour and lifestyle. Readers will develop empathy for the old and lonely man, while noticing the kindness and non-judgemental attitude from Rose and her mother.

A classic story

5

This is a great read for sitting with an adult and looking together. The story starts before the words! Children can find all sorts of reasons for Mr Wintergarden to play with the children. There is a lot of conversation which goes with this book. It's great.
