As a fan of the Scotland Road series and not that fond of the Ladies Detective agency series I approached this, my first Dalhousie series novel by McCall Smith with caution. Surely he can't sustain a female character as the central character in his renowned comedy of manners novels. Well he does. His usual economy with words and spooky insights into our unspoken insecurities and imagined intrigues are all there in this story of a Scottish divorcee approaching middle age with her daily shopping basket full of fantasies and regrets. Can't wait to pick up the next Dalhousie.
