First published in 1971, Response to Music deals with the role of music in education, the formulation of aims and objectives, and the relationship between values, aims, and teaching methods. The author examines the relationship of aims in music education to the requirements of our modern technological society and discusses the adaptability of various foreign systems to music education.

Particular reference is made to those aims concerned with the development of musical responsiveness: such determining factors as musical ability, aesthetic sensitivity, listening reaction patterns, and attitude are considered and their educational implications discussed. Separate chapters are devoted to the development of musical understanding and skills.
