It is not long before he recalls what has occurred... three Roman legions have been annihilated. Facing an onslaught of barbarians, prejudices, and personal demons, Flavius risks his career and future for a cause much more noble than anything Rome had offered him... a promise made to a dying mother. As his soul devours itself from within, the Roman finds himself on a quest for the unattainable, and endures the labors required to become worthy of the ultimate redemption.
