This volume presents an integrative framework for conducting individualized assessments of children and adolescents with a wide range of disabilities and chronic conditions. Expert contributors first provide an overview of the field, reviewing general strategies and approaches to developmental assessment. The volume then addresses the issues that arise in working with young people with particular challenges, including motor impairments, auditory and visual impairments, autism, chronic health conditions, neurological problems, and exposure to trauma. Described are concepts and tools to guide the practitioner in deriving an accurate diagnosis, planning appropriate interventions in clinic or school, evaluating progress, and monitoring treatment outcomes. Structured in a cohesive format, chapters review the nature of each condition and its implications for health, development, and functioning at different ages and in various domains. The uses of specific assessment instruments are considered, and needed modifications in settings, tasks, and procedures identified. Emphasizing methods that are flexible and multidimensional, the volume includes numerous illustrative case vignettes.

'There has long been a need for a comprehensive volume on the assessment of children with disabilities and chronic health conditions... This volume is likely to become the authoritative text in the field. It will prove highly useful for practitioners in clinical, developmental, and pediatric psychology, and for graduatelevel students in these areas.' - Dennis Drotar, PhD, Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital; Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine; 'This text is unique in its broad coverage of quantititative, qualititative, and ecological assessment approaches, all in one volume. The authors do a good job of highlighting the causes of many disabilities and showing how the nature of the disability affects the assessments that will be done. Useful special topics covered include the assessment of children with disabilities who have suffered rom maltreatment or trauma. I was also impressed by the concluding chapter on ethical and legal issues.' - Joan Lieber, PhD, University of Maryland, College Park; 'This volume represents the state of the art in psychological assessment of children. Chapters on assessing children with a variety of special needs are accentuated with current research and compelling case studies. An excellent graduate-level text, the work will also serve as a reference for child psychologists in school or private practice settings.' - Michael D. West, PhD, Virginia Commonwealth University
