Originally published in 1993, this classic piece of literature on adoption has revolutionised the way people think about adopted children. Nancy Verrier examines the life-long consequences of the 'primal wound' - the wound that is caused when a child is separated from its mother - for adopted people. Her argument is supported by thorough research in pre- and perinatal psychology, attachment, bonding and the effects of loss.

Essential Reading for anyone in an Adoption Triad!

5

This book has changed my life! I've spent years in therapy and almost forty years trying to find myself. Nancy Verrier profoundly articulates the issues surrounding adoption and The Primal Wound; a wound so fundamental, it affects every single person involved in an adoption triad. This book SHOULD BE MANDATORY READING for anyone considering adopting a child, who has adopted or given a child up for adoption. Backed by more than twenty-five years of scientific research and driven by a brave mother of an adoptee, Nancy explores the behaviours, emotions, psychological effects, somatic responses, neurological ramifications, interpersonal reactions and physical effects of adoption. This book mostly offers insight into the adoptee herself, but is extremely useful to birth mothers who equally suffered and suffer from the pain of separation from their babies. And to all adopted parents; you weren't going crazy. Read this and it will all make sense! This is an incredibly healing book, extremely easy to read (albeit intelligent and insightful) which makes it appealing to even someone like me with dyslexia who normally avoids reading because it's a major challenge! It is incredibly well formatted and easy to comprehend. The author has written this book from a layman perspective and compassionate personal experience. Equally important to this read is emotional support, preferably from a psychotherapist who has a sound understanding of The Primal Wound. Get your tissue boxes out and a snug blanket. Although, Nancy has such a way of writing that you feel she is wrapping you in a cosy soft blanket herself, nurturing and supporting you through the entire process. Be sure to read the sequel to this book. I recommend to purchase the two together. Trust me... Once you've finished reading The Primal Wound, you'll be aching to read 'Coming Home To Self'. Love, light and healing to all who've been affected by Primal Wounds.
