Population Movements and the Third Worldpresents an accessible and comprehensive introduction to a wide range of forms of population movements in the Third World, with a particular emphasis on rural-urban migration. These movements are examined in the context of the process of development. The association between migration and development is a two-way process: migration is argued largely to be a consequence of the uneven nature of development and the inequalities that have resulted, while at the same time migration also has a powerful influence on the pattern and process of development in Third World countries. This study explores in a conceptual and factual manner some of the main forms of population movement in the Third World today. Mike Parnwell analyzes the causes and consequences of migration, and assesses some of the planning and policy implications of current characteristics of migration. Mike Parnwell has been involved in research into thedevelopmental effects of migration in Southeast Asia since the late 1970s. He gained first-hand insight into the motivation and meaning of migration by living for more than a year with several migrant communities in remote areas of Thailand. His intimate knowledge of and familiarity with the people and development problems of the Third World makes this the ideal introduction to an important and sometimes complex subject.
