The Political Culture of Russian Democrats examines the origins and development of the world view of those who call themselves 'democrats' in Russian in the last years of the USSR. The book develops a distinct approach to the study of political culture and applies it to a specific social groupDSmembers of the democratic movement in Soviet Russia. The author examines the emergence of the ideas of Russian 'democrats' during the Gorbachev era in Soviet politics, and traces the development of those beliefs in the post-Soviet era. The book argues that the liberal and democratic terminology of western politics were assimilated by Russian political culture, with the terms acquiring a different meaning.

Industry Reviews

`This is a complex and original account, whose many sources will make it of particular use as a reference work and historical sourcebook.' ECPR (European Consortium for Political Research) Electronic Newsletter `Adopting a political-cultural framework, Lukin makes a convincing case that Russia's democrats cannot be understood from traditional Western meanings of the term.' T.D.Clark, Choice, March 2001 `Many will value this book for its careful exploration of the existing literature, for its ability to reach beyond the better-known publishing houses based in Moscow and St Petersburg, and for its combination of documentary and interview sources.' Stephen White, Political Studies, Vol.49, No.1 `we need the development of better strategies of analysis. It is this that, in principle, is offered to us by Alexander Lukin's new book' Stephen White, Political Studies, Vol.49, No.1
