The last 25 years have witnessed an enormous increase in research into the electronic properties of disordered systems. In this field Sir Nevill Mott, P.W. Anderson and K.von Klitzing have been awarded the Nobel prizes in physics. The behaviour of electrons in systems without periodicity is one of the most fascinating areas in solid state physics. Several new ideas for understanding electronic states in disordered systems have sparked this off, especially the study of the degenerate electron gas in which electron-electron interactions are important. Impurity conduction in doped semiconductors and two-dimensional electron systems such as those found in silicon inversion layers have served as important test-beds for theories. The authors have done this survey in two parts. The first half of the book treats impurity bands in three dimensions. Attention is focused on the regime in which the electrons are spatially localized rather than free-electron like, so that an interesting interplay of localization and interaction arises. In the second half of the book they turn to the outstanding features of two-dimensional electron systems. After elucidating how two-dimensionality makes the localization problem special and interesting, the authors go on to explain the remarkable effects of magnetic fields, including the normal and fractional Quantum Hall effect.
Industry Reviews
'I can recommend the book as a work of reference on the subjects of the authors' expertise ... and as an experimental review of electronic behaviour in the Anderson Localized phase.' Professor J.M.F. Gunn, University of Birmingham, Contemporary Physics, Volume 33 Number 2, March/April 1992
