About the Authors

Gayle McKenzie is a lecturer in Acute Nursing at La Trobe University based at the Alfred Health Clinical School in the grounds of the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Gayle coordinates the 3rd year acute nursing subjects, as well as teaching into the four other 3rd year subjects. Previously, Gayle coordinated the pharmacology subject for 4 years, as well as the gerontology and community subjects. She is a registered nurse with many years of clinical experience, predominantly in cardiothoracic intensive care at the Alfred Hospital. Her research interests include the use of herbal medications. She is currently completing a degree in Western Herbal Medicine, which she hopes will supplement her prospective PhD topic. She also recently completed the third edition of her co-authored book Clinical Companion – Medical-Surgical Nursing, and has previously been the Australian author for the third edition of the ANZ Nursing Drug Handbook.

Sussan Pleunik is a lecturer at Deakin University in Melbourne and Geelong and is a guest lecturer at the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF, Vic. Branch). She held the position of Clinical Liaison for the Northern Hospital and Melbourne Health for La Trobe University, and is also involved with teaching staff in a variety of clinical settings. She is a registered nurse with extensive clinical and educational experience in amny states of Australia. Her educational experience includes teaching at all tertiary levels. Sussan taught into all three years of the undergraduate program, including Pharmacology, and teaches Medication Administration updates to registered nurses for CPD. . In the industry, she also teaches personal care attendants (assistants in nursing) Medication Administration. Her research interests include medication administration by all levels of care staff. Sussan manages her own registered training organisation, which delivers competency-based education to both acute and extended-care facilities. She is also a Fellow of the Australian College of Nursing and is a representative of nursing reviewing the National Inpatient Medication Chart.

Associate Professor Rachel Page is a Director of Research and Education for the Massey Institute of Food Science and Technology, Deputy Head for the School of Food and Nutrition and Expertise Team Leader for Human Physiology and Metabolism at Massey University. Rachel has over 25 years’ research experience in the area of metabolism and disease process. Her passion is in understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in the onset and development of disease, with the ultimate aim of identifying therapeutic and diagnostic targets for disease intervention. Her current research is in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, regulation of blood pressure, stroke and chronic pain. Rachel has taught pharmacology at undergraduate and postgraduate level for the past ten years to nursing, midwifery and health science students and enjoys making the science of drugs relevant and accessible to students at all levels.
