St Jude's in Carlton is now one of the largest and most diverse parishes in the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. But, like the suburb of which it is a part, the church has gone through hard times as well as good times.

People of the Risen King tells the story of the founding, early growth, faltering, survival and renewal of this inner-suburban Christian community over the last one hundred and fifty years.

Placing the church in its local setting and in a wider social, theological and diocesan context, Elizabeth Willis recounts the history of this remarkable parish and describes how the congregation and its leaders have, during recent decades, made a significant contribution to church life in Melbourne and beyond.

Industry Reviews

St Jude's Carlton has both an intriguing and influential history and Elizabeth Willis's engaging treatment of this sets its life in the changing cultural environment as well as interacting theologically with the church's life and ministry. Unlike many histories which focus solely on the leader, this book reveals that the ministry of St Jude's is as much about its members. What an encouragement to see the gospel at work so powerfully and diversely for over 150 years. And fittingly the book finishes looking forward to a new chapter of ministry, to new restored facilities.

What a wonderfully and warmly written history of such a significant church! I commend this book with enthusiasm.

Bishop Paul Barker

(Churchwarden at St Jude's, 1984-1987)

This insightful history brings to life the colour, vitality and ethos of St Jude's in an ever changing Carlton. The author places the parish's theological emphases, liturgical practices, social welfare and outreach within the context of changes in the demographics of Carlton, and against a background of wider diocesan, national and international affairs. We hear of depression and boom, the bulldozing of parts of 'old Carlton', new Housing Commission estates, the opportunity to welcome 'New Australians', university ministry, discipleship training, parish partnerships and new congregations. Throughout it all we see the faithfulness of men and women to the work of God. A stimulating read.

Bishop John Harrower

Elizabeth Willis has written a comprehensive, balanced and wise account of a Melbourne evangelical parish whose life has fluctuated between being barely viable and hugely vibrant.

Under God, this church has managed to adapt to major changes both within the suburb of Carlton, and within its own walls. Her account neither veils the disappointments, nor vaunts the more recent times of growth. The incumbency of Reverend Dr Peter Adam is rightly seen as a turning point in the remarkable and fascinating story of St Jude's. Christian readers will find this history, written by a well-informed insider, both challenging and stimulating.
