St Jude's Carlton has both an intriguing and influential history and Elizabeth Willis's engaging treatment of this sets its life in the changing cultural environment as well as interacting theologically with the church's life and ministry. Unlike many histories which focus solely on the leader, this book reveals that the ministry of St Jude's is as much about its members. What an encouragement to see the gospel at work so powerfully and diversely for over 150 years. And fittingly the book finishes looking forward to a new chapter of ministry, to new restored facilities.

What a wonderfully and warmly written history of such a significant church! I commend this book with enthusiasm.

This insightful history brings to life the colour, vitality and ethos of St Jude's in an ever changing Carlton. The author places the parish's theological emphases, liturgical practices, social welfare and outreach within the context of changes in the demographics of Carlton, and against a background of wider diocesan, national and international affairs. We hear of depression and boom, the bulldozing of parts of 'old Carlton', new Housing Commission estates, the opportunity to welcome 'New Australians', university ministry, discipleship training, parish partnerships and new congregations. Throughout it all we see the faithfulness of men and women to the work of God. A stimulating read.
