Get started living a homegrown life with the hugely popular Aussie permaculture educators, Milkwood.

The skills that we learn bind our lives together. Do you want to know how to grow your own food? Or how to keep bees? How to forage for edible seaweed along the shoreline, or wild greens down by the stream? Maybe you're curious about growing mushrooms or how to grow the perfect tomato.

You're invited to make these skills your own. Designed to be read with a pot of tea by your elbow and a notebook beside you, Milkwood is all you need to start living a more home-grown life. From DIY projects to wild fermented recipes, the in-depth knowledge and hands-on instruction contained in these pages will have your whole family fascinated and inspired to get growing, keeping, cooking and making.

Milkwood is the name of Kirsten Bradley and Nick Ritar's first farm as well as their school where anyone can learn skills for down-to-earth living. Kirsten, Nick and a team of educators offer courses on topics contained in this book as well as permaculture design, natural building and much more. Kirsten and Nick live on a small regenerative farm near Daylesford, where many things from the sprouted grain they feed their chickens to ingredients that make up dinner is homegrown.

About the Author

Kirsten Bradley and Nick Ritar left the city to start a small permaculture farm called Milkwood ten years ago, with a dream of living simply and within their means. Since then, they've been growing food and sharing skills wherever they've lived or travelled - from building biochar stoves to creating rooftop community gardens to teaching permaculture design. They currently live, grow, forage and keep bees on a two-acre permaculture farm near Daylesford.

An empowering and joyful guide on living the good life!

Kirsten and Nick are the real deal! They run permaculture courses all over Australia and Indonesia and finally they have written a guide for all those who can't get to their fantastic courses. This book is their detailed guide on how to garner the 'food' around our local areas. After reading this beautifully presented book you'll be enthused to get out in the garden and your neighbourhood and become more self-reliant and empowered! As I live by the ocean I personally loved the seaweed section and now look at seaweed in a totally different way. I can't wait for their next book!

Best book purchase ever!

Beautiful Informative book

Beautiful informative book on five fantastic topics. I have not had a chance to read it all yet but have thoroughly enjoyed it so far. I look forward to putting the information into action very soon and participating in one of the authors courses. I live more inland but enjoyed sampling seaweed on a recent trip to Sydney! It was so exciting! Can't wait to teach my kids and go foraging seaweed on holidays this summer!

A great book if you're looking to try something new

I am currently working my way through this book. As someone just beginning to learn about permaculture, I have found the book to be both informative and inspiring. I love that the authors have chosen to focus on only a few select areas - tomatoes, bee-keeping, mushrooms, seaweed and wild foraging - as this has allowed them to provide in-depth information on each subject with lots of great tips and tricks. To begin with, I plan on giving mushroom growing a go along with making some seaweed tea for the garden! Recommended :)

Very useful reference and an entertaining read

Great book. Helped me identify seaweed and a very useful general reference. Well written and easy to read .

Fantastic book for the backyard or a lifestyle farm

Absolutely fabulous book for those new to gardening or general permaculture, and an invaluable reference book for those who use the permaculture principles everyday.

I do love parts of this book but

I love tomatoes so it was great to read and will go back to read but mushroom , bee keeping and seaweed I have yet to get into well yes mushroom and beekeeping maybe but I live inland so no seaweed. Pages 69 to 223 are these so a massive chunk of the 287 pages in the book.
