Read Caroline Baum's Review

I often have the feeling after reading short stories that they are the reading equivalent of snack food: they leave me hungry after twenty minutes, wanting something more substantial and nourishing. Christos Tsiolkas’ collection is definitely not salted peanuts. It’s more like a great big grass fed steak; there’s so much to chew on here, so much high protein content: all the darkest human desires and impulses are served up, rare, if not downright bloody. The experience of reading this collection is bracing, thrilling, energising. It overflows with a vigorous engagement with emotional and moral conflict and vitality. Its characters are earthed, physically charged with the current that makes humanity fizz and fizzle, spark and short circuit. '...there is not a more important writer working in Australia today.' AB&P

'Tsiolkas has become that rarest kind of writer in Australia, a serious literary writer who is also unputdownable, a mesmerising master of how to tell a story. He has this ability more than any other writer in the country....' Peter Craven, The Sun Herald

'The sheer energy of Tsiolkas' writing - its urgency and passion and sudden jags of tenderness - is often an end in itself: a thrilling, galvanising reminder of the capacity of fiction to speak to the world it inhabits.' James Bradley, The Monthly..

worth the effort

have read his other novels, this is a collection of short stories. his characters are not always likeable which makes it hard reading at times. stories are well constructed but raise at times confronting issues.

You Won't Be Disappointed

Brilliant writing. Fans of The Slap will love it.

Mercilessly Good

Tsiolkas should be a household name for local fiction by now. This collection puts him right up on the shelf with the likes of David Malouf for me. Every story is a gripping out-pouring; a horrific image of our humanity blending recurrent spiritual notions in both character and landscape. Straight from the outset, the title piece of the book, the author offers a coldness and intimacy that takes you back to you back to the first time you read Carver. While the content does become particularly challenging to get through at stages, particularly in the final trifecta, these are stories that can be read and reread and will keep giving more to the reader.
