About the Author

Alison Jardine is a British artist living and working in Dallas, Texas. Her work is multidisciplinary, and she uses paint, fabrics, drawing, concrete, video and construction materials. From 2010 to 2011 she set up the 365 iPad Project for which she created a new iPad artwork every day. She was commissioned to create an iPad work for a social media project for the London Olympics, and her digital art has been featured in several art magazines. She teaches an iPad workshop at the Dallas Museum, and continues to explore the iPad alongside other media.

Industry Reviews

Many people would like to be more creative, if only they could find a little time and a suitable space. Artist Jardine informs readers that they may already be carrying around a complete art studio: their iPad. The basics of composition, color, perspective, figure drawing, still life, landscapes, and portraiture are all given a fresh look here. An introductory section highlights digital tools that go beyond paper, pencil, canvas, and paint. Jardine recommends drawing and painting apps, with a preference for the simplest and most intuitive. Step-by-step exercises illustrate a range of techniques on a variety of themes, including one inspired by established artists such as Claude Monet and even the contemporary master Banksy. VERDICT This guide will appeal to beginning and seasoned artists alike.--Library Journal,

Art School on your iPad

I am so pleased I bought this book! It is very inspiring, and the author writes in a chatty, accessible way. I had messed around with apps, but basically didn't know what it was I wanted to paint. This book really has got me started. It covers a LOT of ground, and I particularly loved the project on the cherry blossom, Van Gogh's sunflowers, as well as the section on how to compose a painting. Some specifics on how to use the apps are covered by following the projects through - the tips are built in to each of the lessons, rather than in a separate section. For some of them, you can use your own preferred app if you want – which is great because this book won't go out of date with each new app update. Most apps have tutorials built in anyway. There's a bit of art history in here too, and some fun facts. The projects are creative and fresh, and are structured around classic skills and genres taught in art schools, so you will actually learn real art skills. Also, it's one the best laid-out art books I've bought – each page is colorful and interesting. Overall, it really is a pleasure to read. I think it's a excellent book for anyone who likes art, and wants to try iPad drawing and painting.
