Madame de Sevigne, a contemporary of Louis XIV, has made a significant contribution to the understanding of 17th-century France through her voluminous correspondence. This is a biography of the woman for whom freedom was an important consideration. Widowed at the age of 25, she garnered her resources, raised and provided for her two children and successfully resisted offers of marriage. The Marquise de Sevigne read widely, travelled extensively in France, loved nature and collected a large number of life-long friends including Madame de LaFayette, La Rochefoucauld and Madamoiselle de Scudery. She recorded important political events, religious controversies, wars and disasters, medical practices and the social and cultural life of the court and of "people of quality".
Industry Reviews

Ojala, provide a solid and extremely readable account of Mme de Sevigne's life that would be of value to the interested student and specialist alike. This well-researched text gives the reader a good selection of Mme de Sevigne's correspondence which supports the author's arguments and illustrates her unique powers of observation as she moves through seventeenth century society." --AUMLA
