By presenting twenty-four autobiographies, Life Stories of the Nicaraguan Revolution illuminates the experience of the Nicaraguan people during the Sandinista Revolution. This work is not a political or social analysis of Nicaragua today. Rather, it is a portrayal of the human dimension of the current conflict - of what it is like to be alive in Nicaragua now. Hence it allows the NIcaraguan people to tell their own story in a collective autobiography, a mosaic of triumph and traged. The personal histories are grouped into three categories - political lives, religious lives, and survivors' lives. Together they reflect the Nicaraguan experience from the inside, as it has been lived and felt. The individual narratives express vividly the divisions within families; the intense heat of political and religious controversies; the constant uprooting of the population; the relentless conditions of scarcity, danger and loss. Yet the autobiographies also tell of the deep religious faith of the people; their astonishing courage and forbearance; their resourcefulness in adversity; their generosity in sharing meager resources; and their powerful manifestations of love and hope. The humanistic focus and holistic perspective of this work captures the central features of Nicaragua's revolutionary experience: hope and fear.
