Comments of roughly 20 lesbians - most from the West Coast and many from minority groups - about "coming out," dealing with parents, church, children, etc. In many ways this is the same old tract: look how we've been oppressed, see how little men have to offer, a woman can only be really intimate with another woman, and so on. But some of the consensus may be heartening to others facing the same problems (for instance, most parents who were told seemed to adjust); and there is enough diversity in the stories overall to minimize the ho-hums. One of the more interesting recurring interviewees, Carol Queen, seems to have fallen willy-nilly into lesbianism as a "political and moral statement"; others appear to have had more of a biological urge. Some gave in at age six, others only after 20 years of marriage (and, surprisingly or not, the older women seem more anxious about their grown children's reactions than the younger women about their parents'). Some found clerical understanding (one priest was himself "a faggot"); one was excommunicated from the Mormon Church. Several parents and siblings step in to assure us that they love their daughters or sisters just the way they are. All in all, it's likely to provide aid and comfort to the uneasy; but for those not involved, just another collection of minority struggles slung together to minimal advantage. (Kirkus Reviews)
