Prepare to be swept away by a story that is intimate, true, and utterly compelling. Margi Gibb's much-loved father dies and, with her immediate family largely gone, her life is changed irrevocably. Immersing herself more deeply in art and music, she travels to America to study the sacred art of the mandala, exploring the wisdom traditions of Indigenous Indian peoples in the process. Then after a serendipitous encounter back in Australia she travels to Dharamsala to care for children in an after school program at a Tibetan women's handicraft cooperative. Her underlying passion is to initiate guitar lessons for Tibetan refugees. What follows is unexpected. Margi's developing bonds with two very different Tibetan men, Tenzin and Yonten, change her life in complex and enduring ways.

Eventually she journeys to Tibet. Kissed by a Deer is a book about East and West. It is a passionate quest for the personal and intellectual truth that only comes through lived experience. Gibb's story gives us amazing places, and wonderful characters, people we come to love and care about despite their failings. In its pages, wisdom searchingly finds its humble roots in the connections of heart, imagination and mind; in the midst of the act of living.

Kissed by a Deer is an odyssey of spirit, passion and love. When the death of her father catapults Margi into a quest for meaning. Traveling to Dharamsala, Ladakh, China and Tibet, her story masterfully intertwines the natural and socio-political landscapes with her burgeoning spiritual awakening and search for real love. Kissed by a Deer is a book with heart - of healing, compassion, and love. Whether you love travel biography, or the spiritual memoir genre of Eat, Pray, Love and Wild, you will love Kissed by a Deer as much as I did.

Searching and honest

I feel as though I have been to Tibet. The writing from Margi Gibb is very evocative and descriptive of the landscape and the people. It is a country with a unique soul and religious tradition. The Dalai Lama is its inspiration. The young men are torn between monastic calling and the attractions of western culture. The women are the backbone of family life living close to the land with their hard physical work. I came away with an understanding of the struggle to survive which is at the heart of Tibetan culture and the reason why it will never succumb to Chinese control. Essentially the book is the story of one woman who was prepared to go well beyond her comfort zone in the search for meaning. She did so at a stage in mid-life when most of us are content to accept what life brings us. Margi Gibb writes honestly about her reasons for this search, the death of her father, and the early death of other family members. It is a story of a searching soul who takes the reader with her on a very personal journey. I was enriched by her description of Tibet and intrigued by her honesty.

A torrid love affair with life itself

Kissed by a Deer is an odyssey of a brave young woman intimately sharing her experience of the physical and emotional landscape of travel between two worlds. I found myself immersed in a torrid story of passion, despair, addiction and at times sheer joy as I followed Margi's poignant struggle to find her inner self and reconnect with life purpose.

Thanks Margi for a great read! Thank you for sharing such a great journey, I am very fussy about what I read and began your book not really knowing what to expect. I loved it, it was warm, knowledgeable and interesting. For the likes of me with no experience in the cultures your journey took you on, I was 'enlightened' I can only recomend it highly as an enjoyable read, TOUCHE'.

Is it possible to fall in love with a book? LOVED IT!! An amazing story, beautifully told, with an Australian humour that had me smirking! I defy anybody to come into contact with Tibetans and not be touched by their sincerity, warmth and compassion - and be outraged by the injustices they have suffered (and continue to suffer). A very engaging and enjoyable read. Hopefully it leaves you wanting to know more about Tibet and her people.
