This was no ordinary war.

This was a war to make the world safe for democracy. And if democracy was made safe, then nothing else mattered--not the millions of dead bodies, nor the thousands of ruined lives...This is no ordinary novel.

This is a novel that never takes the easy way out: it is shocking, violent, terrifying, horrible, uncompromising, brutal, remorseless and gruesome...but so is war.

About the Author

Dalton Trumbo, author of the brilliant novel, Night of the Aurochs, was one of the most prolific and important literary figures of our time. His more than sixty screenplays include Spartacus, Exodus, Papillon, and the Academy Award-winning The Brave One. Johnny Got His Gun is the most highly-acclaimed work of Mr. Trumbo s remarkable career."

One of the horrors of war. A powerful image of the need for human connection.

Not for the faint hearted

It is very easy to see why this book was banned for so long. You are readily taken into the mind of Johnny and it is very confronting. I have read this book several times over the years and have seen the movie multiple times and it still shocks me. This story is not for every reader.
