"Gayle Roehm's translation of noted designer Hitomi Shida's second stitch dictionary represents a sea change in the English-speaking world, because now we have a few words to help us through the standardized Japanese symbol system... think of it as opening a window into the way another culture designs and knits. And Shida's stitches? Like calligraphy: fluid, beautiful and complex."-Vogue Knitting

Some of these patterns are going to be very challenging. The friend I bought it for can't decide which one to start first.
Beautifully written and photographed book. You need to be an experienced knitter, and to read instructions carefully to understand patters properly. Very beautiful original knitting designs. Highly recommend if you are a designer or appreciate unique designs.
I have an extensive knitting reference library, and this book is about as close to perfect for a knitting reference as I have ever seen. Clear, precise instructions, beautiful clear photos of the pattern swatches, and the swatches themselves are executed with a technical precision that is just breathtaking. I will be using this book a LOT - the patterns are absolutely stunning, although most definitely not for beginners or people who don't like charts. I have OCD as well and this book actually made me sigh with satisfaction because it is so well presented and the swatches are technically perfect, and everything about it is just beautiful. Wonderful to leaf through just for the sake of looking at the beautiful swatches, but also a great source of inspiration. I suspect I will go through multiple copies of this one from the sheer amount of use it's going to get.

Fantastic Japanese stitch dictionary. Its written in English with explanations for all the weird symbols in Japanese knitting. If you have other Japanese dictionaries, this one will be very helpful in deciphering those books as well. This book also has a section about adding or altering stitch patterns and gives side by side photographs of before and after. Best of all, its so cheap. I would pay $50 for this book and be happy.
This book is a reference volume for knitting design and it suits my purpose perffectly. I must commend Booktopia on the excellent service, eg reasonably priced shipping costs, incredibly fast turnaround time, especially considering it was purchased a week or so before Christmas and the price of the book. I had seen it elsewhere on the 'net for much more. I will definitely use Booktopia again.
Charts are exceptionally well laid out, the sample images bright and clear. Patterns adapt easily to a variety of uses, and included designs are extremely handy for rushed projects
This book is a great resource and recommended to all levels of knitting.
These intricate patterns are just stunning. Not for the beginner knitter but a great introduction to following charted knitting patterns
I would reference this book every time I see a 'plain' pattern!
