The principal theological struggle in Islam has taken place between traditionalist theologians and rationalist ones. Professor Abrahamov examines the foundations of both traditionlism and rationalism in classical Islamic thought, the criticism levelled by each system of thought against the other and the attempts which have been carried out to reconcile reason and tradition. The materials studied cover the third/ninth century to the tenth/sixteenth century.

Industry Reviews

An excellent book and would be much used on a variety of courses. There have in recent years appeared a number of books on Islamic theology which seek to set the subject off in a new direction, and this is definitely such a book. -- Oliver Leaman, Liverpool John Moores University An excellent book and would be much used on a variety of courses.
