For centuries, the voices of ordinary folk in China were muted by the male-dominant Confucian culture and remained largely hidden from outsiders. This is a study of Chinese folktales by ordinary people, especially by women. Combining elements of the supernatural with that of reality, these tales serve as examples of how folk culture co-existed with Confucian culture, and also engaged in passive resistance against the dominant values.
Industry Reviews
"A treasure trove for all those who value folk literature presented with respect and scrupulous care."
