Ayaan Hirsi Ali is one of today's most admired and controversial political figures. She burst into international headlines following the murder of Theo van Gogh by an Islamist who threatened she would be next. An international bestseller, her life story Infidel shows the coming of age of this elegant, distinguished -- and sometimes reviled -- political superstar and champion of free speech.

Ultimately a celebration of triumph over adversity, Hirsi Ali's story tells how a bright, curious, dutiful little girl evolves into a pioneering freedom fighter. As Western governments struggle to balance democratic ideals with religious pressures, no other book could be more timely, or more significant.

About The Author

Ayaan Hirsi Ali was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, was raised Muslim, and spent her childhood and young adulthood in Africa and Saudi Arabia. In 1992, Hirsi Ali came to the Netherlands as a refugee. She earned her college degree in political science and worked for the Dutch Labor party. She denounced Islam after the September 11 terrorist attacks and now serves as a Dutch parliamentarian, fighting for the rights of Muslim women in Europe, the enlightenment of Islam, and security in the West.

WRITE A REVIEW

Misleading account of true Islam

3

A sad account of a young life brutalized in the hands of her own family due to traditions and customs mistakenly performed for religious adherence. Her family let her down by practicing local customs and the author is understandably a bitter opponent of Islam, which can be misleading to a researcher of the faith. Another negative potrayal of Islam due to cultural believes., which is why it's very important for believers to learn the true teachings of any religion before impacting a fragile life. Sadly Ayaan and Islam has to pay the price for the ignorance of her own kin.

Sydney

true

An eye opening account of events.

4

A detailed book which outlines the story of so many people known to the author set in a country I knew so little about. The story sometimes becomes a little hard to follow as there are a multitude of persons mentioned, however, the author keeps re covering each association. If you liked Desert Flower and Desert Nomad by Waris Dirie you will like this book and Ayann Hirsi Ali's second book Nomad (I have not yet read Nomad).
