The Wheaton Franciscans will begin a year long celebration of the 150th anniversary of their founding beginning in October 2009. To commemorate the 150th anniversary the Wheaton Franciscans have published an historical account through Arcadia Publishing Images of America series titled The Wheaton Franciscan Heritage. The book traces the Sisters ministry in this country in response to the needs of a growing immigrant population. This influx of pioneering women dedicated to serving God and their neighbor was a major factor in the development of health care, education, and other social services in the United States. The Wheaton Franciscan Heritage tells the story through more than 180 photographs tracing the beginning of the Congregation in Germany and telling the story of these remarkable women as they overcame misfortune and poverty in America to establish a variety of ministries, chief among them health care and housing.
