Losing the ability to speak after throat cancer is one of the most painful outcomes patients face post-surgery. In response, Dr. Vishal Rao, a cancer surgeon based in Bengaluru, India, created an affordable alternative. Inspired by a chance observation of a tampon's design and supported by artisans from Channapatna—a town famous for wooden toys—Dr. Rao developed a lightweight, easy-to-insert prosthesis that allows air from the lungs to pass into the esophagus. This airflow vibrates, creating sound that the patient can then shape into words using their mouth.

Initially created for Indian patients, the Aum device has now reached hospitals in the United States, Europe, and developing nations. Its affordability, simplicity, and effectiveness make it a powerful tool in global healthcare, especially in resource-constrained settings.

Dr. Rao's invention has received global recognition for merging frugal innovation with social impact. He has patented several medical devices and continues to advocate for speech accessibility worldwide. In addition to restoring speech, the device supports local craftsmanship and empowers communities economically.
