Award-winning children's fiction author Karen Foxlee makes her picture book debut with this classic hero story about the difference one small voice can make.

In a very fine house, on a very grand street, Lived the tiniest mouse you could possibly meet. The youngest of twelve, he was timid and slight, But he was always, ALWAYS very polite.

When tiny Horatio Squeak is invited to a mysterious party at the top of the stairs, he finds himself in the unexpected company of kittens with dreadfully bright teeth and dreadfully sharp claws. Despite their intimidating appearance, the kittens are welcoming hosts who seem to enjoy Horatio's company. But when they spot a bird in the window, they cannot resist the urge to catch it. As Horatio watches on with horror, he finds the courage to speak out and save the scared bird. With his newfound bravery, Horatio returns home feeling stronger and not nearly so small.

    Industry Reviews
Bravery and standing up for oneself and others are great themes in children's books. The fact that in Horatio Squeak it's one tiny mouse against a trio of cats gives the story the epic tone of a fable, and the reader can't escape the fact that there's a worthwhile message in the story. The text is written in rhyme, which makes it good to read aloud, and the illustrations are sweet with a nostalgic feel. * Books and Publishing *
This story deftly tackles a range of social issues in a manner easily accessible for children. Horatio experiences anxiety over attending the party and, once there, he tries hard to fit in. It's when he witnesses the bullying of another, that Horatio discovers his own true strength. Foxlee's skilful incorporation of big themes into this tale of a little mouse will have readers relating to this unlikely hero. Evie Barrow's delightful gouache and pencil illustrations add colour, innocence and joy to the pages. The images are created with warmth and affection which further endears Horatio to the reader. Uplifting and inspiring, Horatio Squeak has a place in every primary classroom and is certain to become a favourite of children, parents and teachers alike...Highly Recommended * CBCA: Reading Time *
