Accessing your on a(n) device

The eText Library will NOT work with any e-ink (eReader) devices.

However, you can read your eTextbooks on any computer, tablet or mobile phone. eTextbook is compatible with both Macs and PCs as well as iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, and Chromebook devices.

  1. Sign in to your Booktopia account.
  2. Go to your Digital Library and select My eText Library.
  3. Select the eTextbook you want to read and a new browser tab will open with your content.

Installing Kobo Desktop for Windows:

  1. Download the Kobo desktop app on your computer, click here to be taken to Kobo's website.
  2. Launch the installer and follow the onscreen setup instructions.
  3. Once you’ve installed the app, sign in with your Booktopia email address and password by clicking on "More sign-in options" then select Booktopia. Once you’re signed in, the app may take a few minutes to sync your digital library.
  4. Click on "My Books". It will display all of the books that are available in your account. Tap the download icon of the book you’d like to read.

Installing Kobo Desktop for Mac:

  1. Download the Kobo desktop app on your computer, click here to be taken to Kobo's website.
  2. Launch the kobosetup.dmg file that you downloaded. Drag the Kobo Desktop icon into the Applications folder.
  3. Go to the Applications folder and launch the Kobo App to open.
  4. Once you’ve installed the app, sign in with your Booktopia email address and password by clicking on "More sign-in options" then select Booktopia. Once you’re signed in, the app may take a few minutes to sync your digital library.
  5. Click on "Books". It will display all of the books that are available in your account. Tap the download icon of the book you’d like to read.

If you are downloading your eBook to your Kobo device using a USB cable:

  1. Download the Kobo desktop app on your computer, click here to be taken to their website.
  2. Click the red "Download now" button and install it on your computer.
  3. Once you've installed the app, sign in with your Booktopia email address and password by clicking on "More sign-in options" then select Booktopia. Once you're signed in, the app may take a few minutes to sync your digital library.
  4. Turn on your eReader. Select the language you want to use and then select "Don't have a Wi Fi network?"
  5. Connect the Micro USB cable to your eReader and the other end to a USB port on your computer.
  6. A "Configuring & Syncing" screen will appear and automatically set up your eReader.
  7. If you don't see the "Configuring & Syncing" screen, try plugging your eReader into a different USB port on your computer.

If you are downloading your eBook to your eReader device using a Wifi connection:

  1. Open the Home screen of your eReader.
  2. Tap on the Sync icon on the top of the screen and select "Sync now".
  3. Your eReader will connect to the internet and download any available updates or eBooks.

You cannot listen to audiobooks on the Kobo Desktop app.

You can listen to audiobooks using your Booktopia Reader App on a mobile or tablet device, as well as the following Kobo eReaders:

Bluetooth® wireless headphones or speaker required.

  1. Install the Booktopia by Rakuten Kobo App. You can download the app for Android from Google PlayiOS from the Apple App Store to read and listen on your phone, iPad or tablet.

    Search "Booktopia" and install the app. If you already have the app then you can go to Step 2.

  2. Launch the app and sign in with the email address and password you used to make your purchase with Booktopia.

    Once you're signed into the app it may take a few minutes to display your digital library.

  3. Tap on the menu icon on the top left corner of your screen, and tap on "My BooksAudiobooks". All of the books that are available in your account will be displayed.

    On the bottom part of your home page, tap on "BooksAudiobooks". All of the books that are available in your account will be displayed.

    Tap the cover of the book that you would like to read and then tap the "Download" button.

    Please note that some Audiobooks might take a little longer to download depending on the file size and your internet connection speed.

How do I access my eTextbook content?

Access your eTextbook content via the Booktopia website under eTextbook Library in My Account. Select the eTextbook and a new web browser tab will open with your content.

What devices can I read an eTextbook on?

You can read your eTextbooks on any compatible computer, tablet or mobile phone. eTextbooks are compatible with both Macs and PCs as well as iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, and Chromebook devices.

Do I have to be connected to the internet to read my eTextbook?

Yes.

What browsers can I read my eTextbook on?

You can read your eTextbooks on the current or previous version of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Opera, Mobile Safari, or Chrome for Android.

Can I access my eTextbook on more than one device?

Yes. You can access your eTextbook on up to 4 authorised devices only (2 computers AND 2 mobile devices)

You have Reached your Machine Activation Limit

When signing in on a new computer or mobile/tablet device, you may receive a message stating that you have reached your maximum number of devices.

Only two computers and two mobile devices are able to be activated at any given time on your account.

If you are activating a new computer or mobile device, and receive the error message: "You have reached maximum device Limit" you will need to de-authorise a computer or mobile device linked to your account in order to activate a new one.

What is the difference between an eText and an eTextbook

eTexts, also known as eTextbooks, are the terms used for electronic versions of a text that can be read on a desktop, tablet or a mobile device. Electronic textbooks may include part or all of the printed text version.

Can I Cancel/Refund this product?

Change of Mind

You may cancel your eTextbook purchase and request a refund for change of mind reasons only within a reasonable period, provided that:

  • You have not viewed and/or printed, in total, more than twenty percent (20%) of the eTextbook.
  • You have not yet used the access code for any online resource that may be included with your eTextbook purchase.

Can I purchase eTextbooks in bulk?

Can I print from my eTextbook?

Some eTextbooks can be printed; restrictions are set by the content publisher for each eTextbook.

Please note that printing is for personal use only. Any commercial use is not allowed as it violates the Terms of Use.

What is CoachMe?

CoachMe provides ungraded practice questions and knowledge checks right in your eTextbook Bookshelf. These AI-generated questions help you prepare and practice all in one place. This learn-by-doing approach based on learning science can improve your study experience by showing you what you already know, so you can focus on what you need to learn.

How do I have the eTextbook read aloud to me?

Once you have opened up the Read Aloud function through the More Options section of the eTextbook, you can have the book read aloud under the default settings by using the play icon. When you select the play icon, you will see the text being read aloud in yellow, and the play icon will become a pause icon.

How do I create a Citation in an eTextbook in Bookshelf?

The Citation function is within the Table of Contents view of an eTextbook in the Bookshelf. Select the ... icon when the Table of Contents is open.

Note: The Table of Contents Views and Citation may not be available in every eTextbook due to our Partnering Publisher's choice to not include page numbers within their source file. We cannot update an eTextbook source file with page numbers to enable Citations because the publisher owns the copyrighted material.

What are Flashcards?

Flashcards are a built-in study tool. They have a front and back, will shuffle, and also allow you to notate eg whether you knew the information on the card or not.

How do I take notes in my Bookshelf eTextbook?

Anytime you select text to create a Highlight, you will be presented with a menu (unless you have already turned on Fast Highlighting). You then can select "Add Note." This will create the Note, with the first Highlighter shown at the top of the menu.

What is an eTextbook's Margin Notes?

The back arrow icon opens the currently-viewed sections' Margin Notes. These are the notes you make when highlighting your eTextbook.

Where can I read my eBook?

Your eBooks can be downloaded onto any of the following programs:

  • Booktopia by Rakuten Kobo for iOS and Android
  • Kobo Desktop app for your PC or Mac

You can download the app for iOS from the Apple App Store, or for Android from the Google Play Store.

To read on your PC or Mac please install the Kobo Desktop App. You can download the app here.

Alternatively the book is also available on your Kobo eReader device when you sign in with your Booktopia account email and password.

Downloading your eBook after installing the app

How do I download my eBook on my Booktopia eReader app?

  1. Open the Booktopia eReader app on your iOS or Android device.
  2. Click on "Continue with Booktopia" and log in using your Booktopia account information.
  3. Open the "My Books" section, all of your purchased eBooks will be listed. Next to each title there is a download button.
    • For iOS: On the bottom part of your home page, tap on "Books".
    • For Android: Tap on the menu icon on the top left corner of your screen, and tap on "My Books". It will display all of the books that are available in your account.
  4. Click on the download button. Once the download is completed, you can click on the eBook to read the title.

How do I download my eBook through the Kobo Desktop App?

  1. Open the Kobo Desktop App on your computer.
  2. Click on sign in button in the top right and select "More Sign-in Options". Choose Booktopia and sign in with your Booktopia account.
  3. Click on "My Books" located at the top of the screen.
  4. All undownloaded eBooks will display a downward facing arrow, this is the download button. Click this button to download your books.
  5. Once downloaded, you can begin to read your eBooks.

How do I sync my eBook to my Kobo eReader?

Please note your computer must be connected to the internet to set up your eReader.

If you are downloading your eBook to your Kobo device using a USB cable please follow the below instructions.

  1. Download the Kobo desktop app on your computer, click here to be taken to their website.
  2. Click the red "Download now" button and install it on your computer.

Audiobook Subscriptions

How do I cancel my Audiobook Subscription?

To cancel your Audiobook subscription, go to the Kobo website and sign into your account. Select "My Account" at the top of the screen, then "My Subscriptions" and follow the onscreen instructions.

If you require any further assistance, we recommend you contact Kobo directly.

What happens when I cancel my audiobooks subscription?

Any available Audiobook credits will remain in your Kobo account for six months, beginning from the cancellation date. If you purchased any Audiobooks using your credits, they will remain under your account and can be listened to even after your subscription is cancelled.

Will I lose my audiobook credits if I cancel my subscription?

No, Audiobook credits will remain in your Kobo account for six months, even after you cancel your subscription.

How much time do I have to use my audiobook credits?

You have six months from the date of cancellation to use your remaining Audiobook credits.

What do I get with my Audiobook subscription?

By subscribing to Kobo Audiobooks, you will earn one audiobook credit per month. This can be redeemed for one Audiobook, accessible through the Booktopia and Kobo smartphone/tablet applications.

How long are my Audiobooks available?

There is no time limit imposed on how long you can access your Audiobooks, they will be available for use even if you decide to cancel your subscription.

How much does a subscription cost?

$12.99 AUD per month, you can trial the subscription with a 30 day free trial for new accounts.
