A comprehensive and practical handbook that identifies fishes commonly seen in Australian waters.

A comprehensive and practical handbook that identifies fishes commonly seen in Australian waters. The species entries are grouped in families in the internationally accepted scientific order. Families are arranged so that those with closely related features follow on from one another, making comparison easy. Length measurements for adults are given along with general text highlighting, diagnostic features, interesting aspects of the species and habitat.

Every species account is accompanied by one or more colour photographs, nearly all of which show the fishes in their natural habitat, and a distribution map. All these features enable positive identification of over 950 species.

Great reference, especially due to the photos

The only Australian fish guide I could find with photography included, making ID so much easier. Did not disappoint.

Not the best for FNQ

Coming from Far North Queensland, I was looking for a book that would represent most fish from the Great Barrier Reef, and many others around Australia. I was slightly disappointed when I opened it up and common families such as the Serranids and Lethrinids were under-represented. I think that as a book that is advertised to be suitable for divers and fishermen, recreationally targeted species should be elaborately addressed. Fish like the coral trout have several species, each of which are not always easy to distinguish between for the inexperienced fisho/diver, and should be of particular concern considering they can be mistaken for another species and taken away. It would've also been nice to have more than one common name, because what the North Queenslanders might call a Giant Trevally, others might call a Giant Kingfish, which I would think of something different altogether. Might just consider getting a book especially for North Queensland/Coral Sea to make up for this.
