‘I had a slight inkling that things were not quite right. I, too, had felt a slender change in me. It was a feeling. I could neither touch nor see it – so how could it be real? I was out of kilter, out of sync.’

When Kim Hodges’ psychologist suggests she has depression, she immediately recoils from the idea. She is a mother, a wife, an academic – a functional human being! But it is the only diagnosis that explains the days she can barely lift her heavy limbs out of bed, the sick feeling that moves its way across her body and brain, the isolation, alcohol use, the colour that evaporated and left her world grey.

What follows is a five-year journey that involves six lengthy hospital stays, multiple trips to the Emergency Department, innumerable engagements with health professionals, and eventually, the ability for Kim to overcome the denial, shame and stigma she feels about mental illness to begin her road to recovery.

Raw, honest and confronting, Girl Over the Edge strips bare the range of human emotions, struggles and treatment options associated with mental illness, and delivers an overall message of hope and positivity.

About the Author

Kim Hodges currently resides on the NSW north coast and immerses herself in the pristine beauty of beaches, mountains and estuaries. She grew up in Coolah, a small remote town in Central NSW, Australia with a population of 900, and has lived in Sydney and the UK.

In her mid forties she commenced writing her memoir to store in the cupboard for her lads to read in the years to come, but she realised this story was unique and may resonate with a broad readership. Kim has been employed in many professional roles: tutor and lecturer in the School of Arts and Social Sciences (Southern Cross University), and a consultant in curriculum development (TAFENSW) and policy (NSW Government).

An amazing account of a personal experience. I am in awe of Kim's courage to share the gravity and reality of being mentally unwell. Her confidence shines as she isn't defined by her mental health experience, but rather that she faces it with inner strength. If this insidious illness raises its ugly head again, Kim can be assured of such understanding and support from many who would be there for her. AS I have read Girl on The Edge, this was a wonderful read to follow her young experience in a small, rural and remote town. I am inspired by her story, humbled to share such an intimate account of her illness, and delighted to witness her strength and courage as she stands tall and takes it out into the community.

I had no idea on how traumatic mental illness effects not just the sufferer but the flow on effect to family, friends and colleagues . I'm more open to seeing the signs due to reading this book and have developed such a high respect to the survivors of mental illness. Kim Hodges books have really helped me to have an understanding of the sadness, loneliness, devastation and isolation that mental illness creates. My view has totally changed as I personally thought patients could just snap out of depression. I really enjoyed this book and was taken on an emotional and inspiring journey on every page. This book had everything in the way of the characters, storyline and emotion. I just really enjoyed this book ( I couldn't put it down ) and I hope Kim Hodges continues to write more books on this important issue.
