A seminal study of the genealogy of the modern poster from the late 19th century to the 1970s.

Richly illustrated with an outstanding archive of 291 images selected by Müller-Brockmann, accompanied by his intriguing insights into composition, function and style.

Preserves the design, layout and concept of the landmark original edition.

About the Authors

Josef Muller-Brockmann (1914-96) was a leading authority on graphic design and a master poster designer. His work is characterized by minimalist clarity and intense composition. Based in Zurich, he lectured extensively and was the author of many books, among them the hugely influential Grid Systems in Graphic Design (1989).

Shizuko Muller-Brockmann (b.1934) worked with her husband on a number of projects and was lecturer in Visual Design at Kyoto Kyoiku University. She also worked as a freelance graphic designer throughout her career.

'According to the Muller-Brockmans, a poster 'should inform, stimulate, activate, expound, query, provoke, convince.' While modern posters may not live up to these ambitions, this book certainly does.' (Francesca Gavin, Blueprint) 'Defends poster art against accusations of being easy and accessible by making the point that a mass-communications brief is more difficult to satisfy than the solitary artist's need for self-expression.' (Stephen Bayley, Independent) 'A design classic.' (The Times) 'A fascinating journey through the glory days of that most inescapable method of visual communication...There's arresting imagery on almost every page.' (Independent)
