Society consists of various social groups coexisting within a hierarchical structure, where some groups possess a disproportionate share of political, economic, and cultural power. Groups defined by gender are most often also defined by social status; these two categories - gender and social status - are deeply intertwined and cannot be considered separately. Women rarely reach the top layers of social hierarchies - a phenomenon commonly and familiarly known as the glass ceiling effect. Because of its damaging consequences in terms of discrimination and prejudice, the intricate relationship between gender and social status has been the object of sustained research attention. Sociology sheds light on the social dynamics leading to women's lower status, while social psychology offers a comprehensive view of the differences between men and women that derive from differences in their social status. Our social circumstances are always fluid, however, and there is a need for a fresh and coherent picture of recent and applied research on the gender-social status relationship. Men and Women in Social Hierarchies addresses this gap by exploring current theoretical advances in gender psychology and providing tools for developing practical and political recommendations. The volume offers a collection of innovative approaches from emerging scholars to understand the dynamics of the relationship between gender and social status from a social-psychological perspective. It is designed to be used in lectures and seminars on psychology of gender, and covers a broad array of human life contexts that are generally considered separately (e.g. professional, educational, sexual, multicultural, etc). In casting its net wide, the volume offers a unique perspective on the pervasiveness of status asymmetry between gender categories that will appeal to scholars and students in related areas across the social sciences and offer important insights to practitioners and policy-makers.
