The strategic nature of GaAs technology has attracted heavy investment from companies in information technology, communication and defence, as well as from semiconductor manufacturers. To gather the European activities fragmented amongst various research groups, a number of collaborative projects were established in 1984 under ESPRIT (European Strategic Programme for Research on Information Technology).
