Eòin McConaghy is shot at the entrance to the Admiralty on Whitehall in the morning of Wednesday, 23 February 1842. He is shot in the back; he will not have had any notion of his assailant. Irish urchins, Cian Hegarty and Tadhg Gallagher run away from the scene having pickpocketed the victim. Hegarty carries a pistolet that has been fired; he has a £100 gold fob-watch on him. Both boys are apprehended and tried. But did they do it? A day after their trial ends a bomb explodes at the front door of the First Lord of the Admiralty's residence: a footman is killed; a housemaid seriously injured. What is the connection? Scotland Yard seems to be barking up the wrong tree. A chance event on the day of the murder leads to Frieda's involvement in the case. She decides to conduct her own investigation. Upon reflection, she draws different conclusions from those held by the Metropolitan Police.
