Resourceful and entertaining, Flotsam and Jetsam are the Borrowers of the seashore. One day Flotsam and Jetsam find a whistle. They don't know what it is and, when Flotsam blows it, it makes a horrible sound so they keep it as a seagull scarer. But little do they know that someone else has heard it too - a big dog with a wet nose who comes to investigate. He even spends the night in their boat house! The next day they all play on the beach but the dog's owners soon spot him and collect him, leaving Flotsam, Jetsam and Sainsbury alone on their tiny beach. This is an inventive, funny series featuring characters made out of driftwood who live on a treasure-laden beach. Racing Reads are pacy and engaging first novels for the newly independent reader. Each book is extensively illustrated and the story-per-chapter structure is ideal for building reading confidence. You can share more of Flotsam and Jetsam's adventures in Flotsam and Jetsam: A Home by the Sea (9781406352160) and Flotsam and Jetsam and the Stormy Surprise (9781406352184).

Industry Reviews
Writing for children that's of a very high standard. The illustrations by Ruth Rivers are a perfect accompaniment to the text and often give valuable clues where help with the vocabulary might be needed. It's also a book that children will return to because it's fun, interesting and has a good plot. Highly recommended - particularly for any child who isn't yet ready for a full-length book. * www.thebookbag.co.uk *
