This introductory text presents the applications of the finite element method to the analysis of heat conduction and convection problems. Only linear problems are considered, and all of the basic instruments are provided to allow the reader to understand the finite element procedures dealing with the solution of complex laminar and turbulent fluid flow problems. The text is completely self-sufficient, with details given of the techniques employed and new concepts illustrated with examples. Thus, only a basic knowledge, at an undergraduate engineering level, is assumed for linear algebra, calculus and FORTRAN programming. Several examples of the computer code are included both in the text and in the accompanying disk. Two appendices deal with preprocessing of input data, including automatic mesh preparation, and postprocessing of the results, including automatic plotting of the mesh and of the contour lines.
