The Muslim community that is portrayed to the West is a misogynist’s playground; within the Muslim community, feminism is often regarded with sneering hostility.

Yet between those two views there is a group of Muslim women many do not believe exists: a diverse bunch who fight sexism from within, as committed to the fight as they are to their faith. Hemmed in by Islamophobia and sexism, they fight against sexism with their minds, words and bodies. Often, their biggest weapon is their religion.

Here, Carland talks with Muslim women about how they are making a stand for their sex, while holding fast to their faith. At a time when the media trumpets scandalous revelations about life for women from Saudi Arabia to Indonesia, Muslim women are always spoken about and over, never with. In Fighting Hislam, that ends.

A little too Academic

The content is great and incredibly informative but it quite difficult to read, being adapted from Carland's PHd thesis

Review of Hislam

This book is repetitive long sentences overall the book structure in clumsily put together. And the content does not reflect the truth. Moreover, it is a good brainwashing tool. The issues of true Sharia Law and how it is not compatible in the West, are not discussed.

I was disappointed as I was expected something academic

The author didn't explore accurately the history of the issues discussed. What were the early women she presents objecting if not an intrinsic problem with the philosophy? The author has a very selective use of the texts considered authoritative within Islam.

Informative and engaging, great read.

A great addition to my bookshelf.

Wonderfully engaging book

As Susan Carland says herself: too often Muslim women are spoken of or about - this book is wonderfully warm, informative and insightful. Highly recommend - enjoy!
