The book provides practical advice on how to run a competitive business with a Christian mindset. Around one in three Australian charities are faith-based, and this same ratio is reflected in charities globally. There are enormous challenges for these leaders whose roles combine a faith and business mission. In this book, Rev Keith Garner shares how he successfully tackled the challenges. With an introduction by Rev Tim Costello AO, this book is also a practical guide to all business leaders who seek to bring their faith to their day-to-day leadership. Keith encourages these leaders not to separate the two - faith and business - but combine them to realise success.

The book comes on the eve of Keiths retirement at the end of December 2020, after 40 years as a faith and business leader, including 15 years as CEO and Superintendent of Wesley Mission. During those years, business leaders, social sector leaders, and charity leaders have regularly sought Keiths counsel on the challenges they face in combining their faith with the running of a competitive business.

Book Features:
  • Introduction by Rev Tim Costello AO
  • Testimonial from former Prime Minister The Hon. John Howard OM AC
  • First "hands on" practical leadership guide published in Australia on how to run a faith-based charity successfully.

  • With Keith having worked and lectured around the world, in particular the UK, the book will also appeal to his overseas contacts holding similar roles.

About the Author

Keith Garner has been a faith and business leader for more than 40 years. During the past 15 years, in the unique role of CEO and Superintendent of Wesley Mission in Sydney, Keith led a multi-million dollar social services business and ministered to large city centre congregations. Calling on faith and business skills, Keith and his team steered Wesley Mission through dramatic government outsourcing and policy changes, the global financial crisis, soaring numbers of vulnerable Australians, Royal Commissions, and COVID-19, to build a resilient organisation, both financially and culturally, serving more Australians in need.

Keith has authored five books, three on Methodist leaders and two on finding strength through faith. Related to these works, he co-wrote and presented an award-winning documentary and presented another documentary series broadcast on national television. He regularly speaks out on welfare issues in the mainstream media.
Industry Reviews

Keith Garner is a remarkable exemplar of a Christian leader who has thrived in a competitive environment, without in any way giving ground on the values which have always moulded his life. Over 15 years, I have watched him guide Sydney's Wesley Mission as it cared for the poor, the sick, the neglected and those vulnerable in other ways. Through it all he has retained an endearing optimism, and a lively sense of humour. This book tells the story of a man who has done so much to make Australia's greatest city a better place.

The Hon John Howard OM AC

Motivated by faith, driven by compassion, and constrained by the challenge of business. These are the constant conflicts the leader of a faith-based For Purpose organisation faces daily, if not hourly. The desire for Wesley Mission to fulfil its motivation of doing all the good it can for the vulnerable of Australia, in a way that brings God's love, true compassion and feeling, but ensuring the organisation's financial sustainability can be maintained, is just a minefield. Keith has balanced this true challenge with grace, humility and clarity every day. I have learned so much from his journey.

Meredith Scott, CEO, Opportunity International Australia

It is the best textbook I have read on the unusual challenges of combining Christian ministry and professional service delivery in one of Australia's oldest and largest social welfare charities.

Rev Tim Costello AO

In this book he draws from his unique experience on the way to bring faith to the workplace and to leadership, and how to bring lessons from challenging business decision-making to the church and to a walk of faith. Keith's compassionate, influential and effective Christian leadership has been widely respected throughout corporate, church and political life. Through this book, we can all benefit from his learning, his thinking and his experience.
