Edward's pursuit of an explanation leads them on an expedition that will alter their lives forever. After traveling to Utah to consult with an old friend, he is introduced to another caving enthusiast who invites him and his children on an expedition to explore Big Horn cave in northern Wyoming. During the expedition, Edward learns of life in the earth's interior. Their adventure is interrupted by an evil religious sect from Endocles (the name of the inner world) and Edward's seventeen year old son, Ryan, is kidnapped and taken to Earth's interior.
Edward, with the help of a priest from Endocles, mounts an expedition to recover his son. The team is led to the Earth's interior through caves in the crust. Once there, they discover a beautiful new world where the sun shines eternally. They soon learn that it is a dangerous world as members of the party are abducted by bandits, attacked by prehistoric animals, and threatened by members of the Guild of Baal. Edward also has to face a new and more frightening threat as he realizes his daughter has growing feelings for a man from inner- earth. The team is separated several times in its attempt to recover Ryan and hopefully find a way home. Deception, power, and greed run rampant as Edward discovers plots by different sects within Endocles to control internal politics. Background plots also abound concerning the inner world and the surface world's attempts to exploit and control each other.
Ryan's story is also told as he is forced to make choices between having total power and doing what his parents have always taught him. He must decide what is important in life as he contemplates joining a religious sect who offers him everything but practices human sacrifice.
