Infertility can make women - and their partners - feel completely powerless. This clear, perceptive and incredibly helpful book enables women to empower themselves to not only deal with infertility but navigate the often difficult and confusing path through IVF.

Written by experienced counsellor Claire Hall and fertility expert Dr Devora Lieberman, Empowered Fertility is a practical guide for women to help them cope with their psychological wellbeing, their emotions, family and friends and their attitudes during a very difficult time. It contains clearly structured and expressed information and offers women practical steps to assist them as they go through the processes of treatment for infertility.

Each section of the book gives the reader information and support to address physical, psychological, emotional and social challenges that can arise when dealing with infertility and also with IVF treatment. Subjects include managing expectations, dealing with fear, releasing control and handling changes in relationships.

The reader can work through at their own pace, making use of the coaching tools and exercises to help with each step. For readers who are starting or in the midst of IVF treatment, the last section of the book forms an IVF Cycle Handbook, to guide women through their experience.

Amazing tool & informative read

After suffering with infertility for many years now I found this such a helpful tool going into IVF again after already having my first child through IVF a few years ago. The book gives you great tips for all situations and how to manage them which was something I always struggled with, such simple and easy to follow advice that really works. I wish this book was around the first time I went through my cycles. Not only is it great for IVF but the tools and advice can be applied in everyday, I has to be the first book I have finished in years.

A helpful perspective through a difficult time

I purchased this book before commencing my recent IVF treatment. I wasn't sure what to make of it at first, as it felt very much about life coaching & mindfulness rather than infertility. I didn't write in a journal as the book suggests, but at each step I took the time to reflect on my thoughts. This won't be for everyone but I certainly felt that the meditation and positive thinking techniques helped me to get through my treatment. If nothing else, this book helps to give women another perspective on the difficult issues that they may be facing, and teaches them to be kind to themselves and exercise self-care.

counsellor and medical expert travel the journey with you

I bought this book to enable me to understand a friend's current situation, so that I could be an informed support person and a source of strength for her during a confronting phase of her life. It became clear to me that my friend was enduring a set of anxieties that are highly personal and incomparable to life's other tough propositions. I found this book to be a unique resource that completely lives up to its title. It delivers a powerful set of strategies to enable women to take charge of their life when having a child becomes a struggle for whatever reason. The two authors of this 12 step guide are an ideal team. Their collaboration has delivered a set of life changing illuminations, expert medical information about the IVF experience and important milestones to expect and manage. I have discovered through my close friend's experience that women who struggle with fertility encounter unfamiliar fears and anxieties. I believe this ground breaking book succeeds in unpacking and addressing the negative emotions that a woman feels and it seeks to set the woman free of her self- imposed limitations. The tools and exercises are not only practical and illuminating but once practised I believe they have the power to reorganise perceptions about oneself, readdress expectations and then be slowly eased into a very intimate reality check. Some of the revelatory moments for me were the journal exercises designed to detach you from expectations and all the negativity that arrives with those perceptions and then onto the next phase of "Cultivating gratitude." Also the instructions to discard regret and to avoid dwelling on the "What if's" are very potent. There are even breathing exercises to accompany those answers that can be difficult to reconcile. It's very readable but the ultimate value is with the exercises, the journal keeping and responding to the questions, if you are about to embark on IVF treatment I think the milestone chapters by Dr Devora Lieberman will not only prepare you but they will also assist you in being assertive and yes, .... empowered.

This book truely spoke to me

My husband and I underwent IVF a few years ago unsuccessfully. I had several session with Claire Hall to help me make important decisions around accepting life without children or taking the plunge and head overseas to buy a donor egg. In the end we both decided to move forward in our life as "free range" parents. This book really resonated with me and I truly believe it will help both women and men deal with this very stressful journey. Well done Claire and Devora!
