Despite the fact that there have been a large number of scientific studies on coppice woodlands, this is the first book devoted to the modern ecology of coppice. In the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, the management of woodlands by coppicing and pollarding in Britain was widespread and remained so until the late 19th century when pressure on land led to their decline. This way of managing woodlands and the implications of its decline is of great interest to foresters, conservationists and ecologists in a wide range of temperate areas of the world. Contributed to by leading experts, this book looks at the history of coppice their physical enviroment the different management techniques used and their effects on the flora and fauna. The implications of this for conservation is controversial and this is debated in a lively way by many of the chapters.
