CALL SIGN, WHITE LILY is the story of Lilia Litvyak (Lydia Litvyak 1921-1943), a beautiful but determined teenager from Moscow who grew up in a male-dominated society to become the most successful female fighter pilot in the history of the world, with 268 successful missions and 15 solo Nazi kills to her credit, prior to her 22nd birthday. The fact that she was shot down at the tender age of 21, then lost in time and history for over 60 years is in itself one of the great tragedies of a war that took the lives of almost 40 million Russians.

CALL SIGN, WHITE LILY traces Lilia's childhood years—her love of white lilies and fireflies, and her dogged determination to compete with boys—to her more "mature" teen years where she learned to fly at 16, trained male pilots at 18, and eventually was invited to join Russia's most elite flying battalion, where she excelled in the skies, made friends by the bunches on the ground, and fell madly in love with her captain, the handsome Lyosha Solomatin who perished in a dogfight before her eyes.

How an American with no Russian ancestry would come to write this story, which has only been shared in bits and bits among some Russians, and is absolutely unknown to most of the world, is a curious phenomena. But with the support of some wonderful people you will meet in this book, and three years of travel and research, Lilia is now ready for her "coming-out" party.

CALL SIGN, WHITE LILY, written in the form of an approachable historical novel, has been designed to sound as though it was translated from Russian (which it was not). The book also contains over 50 rare pictures and posters—including Lilia's barren gravesite deep in the Eastern Ukraine—most of which have never before. While the book is based on a true story, certain facts have been altered to enhance the reader's experience.
