The final battle for Middle-earth begins.

Frodo and Sam, led by Gollum, continue their dangerous mission toward the fires of Mount Doom in order to destroy the One Ring.

Aragorn struggles to fulfil his legacy as he leads his outnumbered followers against the growing power of the Dark Lord Sauron, so that the Ring-bearer may complete his quest.

For the third time, a Rings movie was a Best Picture Academy Award nominee and for the first time it claimed that prize (plus 10 more). The King deserves its crown.

Comments about The Lord of the Rings:

Peter Jackson's whole trilogy is a boon for Tolkienites. I don't know of a better movie rendition of a book than Return of the King. Its main virtue is the fact that it's faithful to Tolkien's text and thus possesses all the resplendent traits of the book, including the excellent tactic of having the protagonists separated, the complex "interlacing" of the plot, the uncertainty of victory, the convincing tenor of despair, the horrible realness and depravity of the villains, and the ploy of an "ordinary hero in extraordinary circumstances." The Gollum element is unforgettable, though the whole mix of characters, both gruesome and lovable, enrich the movie in a way that few others can boast. Actually, even without the characters, the world of Middle-Earth would be absolutely charming, with its fantastic musical score that I've had playing in my head for ever. The movie has colossal action scenes though, a gripping climax, and all the suspense and engagement of a gigantic quest that rests upon a couple of bruised individuals. It's impossible to watch Return of the King and not feel that you've just seen a grand movie.
Reading the book beforehand is not essential, but the experience is greatly enhanced if you've already immersed yourself in Middle-Earth to some extent. I might add, it's good to watch the first two movies and have an appetite for fantasy or at least Tolkien. It's mighty hard to think of any weak points.
